With no support tonight, the band have room and time to explore the three individual faces of the monster known as Sebadoh. We have the melodic Foosesque Hardcore of Jason Loewenstein, all heads down underground rock, where no song bothers the wrong side of three minutes. When Jason switches from Bass to sticks, original drummer Eric Gaffney takes over vocal duties, treating the faithful to versions of long lost Sebadoh album tracks and B-sides. Eric's songs are more reflective of the mans power-pop style.
The man usually most associated with the Sebadoh brand though is Mr Lou Barlow. Although tonights show is more about the original, harder sound, when Lous turn at the mic' came we are treated to a glimpse of the later post-Gaffney version of the 'doh, a more song orientated, slightly softer but more passionate set of tunes, highlighted by John Peel favourite "Soul & Fire".
They end the set with, no surprise here, "Gimme Indie Rock" their 1991 big non-hit single, a song in tune with tonight's set both defiantly low-fi and independent but also strangely familiar and expected. So its a classic Sebadoh gig, thats old Sebadoh mind.
